Ukraine as the myth of Europa
Janet Snitkovsky and her husband Emmanuel Snitkovsky, both Ukrainians, immigrated from the Soviet Union in the 1970s. She said they could not live there anymore because they were artists.
“It was absolutely, nothing free,” she said.
They worked on countless art pieces together with both of their signatures on the corner of each.
Emmanuel has since died, and her Palm Springs home is still filled with their artwork, some on display and rows of them leaned against the walls. She is currently selling some of their pieces and plans to donate a portion of the profits to the war effort in Ukraine. One of the collections is named "The Kidnapping of Europa" and references the Greek myth of Zeus kidnapping Europa.
She sees it as a metaphor for the war in Ukraine, with Ukraine as Europa and Russia as Zeus, the god who took Europa from her home and family..

Art world still buzzing over Ukrainian artist Emmanuel Snitkovsky’s “Kidnapping of Europa” artwork collection auction

March 18, 2023; PALM SPRINGS, CA – It isn’t often that one of the great artwork collections of the 20th century is put up for sale. Yet, recent news of Emmanuel Snitkovsky’s iconic “Kidnapping of Europa” artwork collection officially being for sale continues to reverberate throughout the art world.
The collection consists of multiple paintings and a sculpture, which is based on Greek Mythology and depicts a lascivious bull seducing and kidnapping the innocent Goddess Europa. The Snitkovskys were born in Ukraine in the 1930s and worked on the Soviet Union's grandiose public sculptural projects to commemorate the fallen heroes of World War II. The Snitkovskys fled the Soviet Union in 1978 for the United States after having their artwork commemorating the Babi-Yar massacre suppressed by the government.
The Jewish couple clashed with Soviet officials after the government refused to acknowledge the massacre of more than 100,000 Jews. The Snitkovskys thrived in producing artwork while living in New York City and enjoyed successful exhibitions around the U.S. and Europe.
The couple’s style of painting and sculpture called "Renaissance Revival" combines contemporary and classical subjects in a stylized realism that evokes both Thomas Hart Benton and Sandro Botticelli. Their works are highly proficient, polished, and commercial productions in a quirky decorative style.
In addition, the Snitkovsky estate will offer Emmanuel's entire unsold artwork collection, which features hundreds of pieces. The copyrights for Emmanuel’s pieces are for sale at a substantial discount.
